What Is Prostate Cancer?
The prostate is a small, walnut-sized gland, part of the male reproductive system, located under the bladder. Prostate cancer develops from abnormal cell growth that forms a tumour, and can spread if not addressed early. It is the second most common cause of cancer death among men.
Types of Prostate Growth
- Benign (non-threatening) growth rarely a threat, doesn’t usually spread, can be removed and rarely regrows (and if it does, it does so slowly).
- Malignant growth more life-threatening, can spread and cause greater damage; it can be removed but has a strong tendency to regrow.
Symptoms
There are typically no visible symptoms in the early stages. As the disease progresses, symptoms can include a dull ache in the pelvic area, frequent urination or trouble urinating, blood in the urine, painful ejaculation, pain in the hips, thighs or lower back, and appetite or weight loss.
Causes and Risk Factors
Risk increases with age and family history. Lifestyle factors matter too heavy smoking increases risk, though the risk drops within 10 years of quitting. Diet plays a role as well: obesity increases risk, while more fruits and vegetables, less processed food, and regular exercise are recommended.
Prevention
Prostate health is closely tied to heart health, so the same prevention practices apply: healthy eating, exercise, weight management, and not smoking. No drugs fully prevent prostate cancer, but medications can slow its progression ultimately, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is key.
Treatment Options
Treatment depends on age, cancer type, and stage. Non-threatening cancer is often managed with active surveillance regular checkups that delay treatment while monitoring closely. For malignant cancer, options include:
- Prostatectomy surgical removal of the prostate gland.
- Concentrated radiation therapy useful for early-stage cases.
- Cryosurgery uses extreme cold to kill tumours.
- Chemotherapy drugs to destroy abnormal cell growth.
