What Is Flexible Cystoscopy?
Flexible cystoscopy (cystourethroscopy) enables a urologist to view the inside of the bladder and urethra in detail. It is commonly used to diagnose bladder tumours, identify bladder obstruction, and check for abnormalities of the bladder lining.
What to Expect During the Procedure
Cystoscopy is performed as an outpatient procedure in a urology clinic or treatment room no hospital stay is required. The patient first empties their bladder and is positioned on the exam table, and local anaesthesia is administered for comfort. A thin, flexible, lighted cystoscope is then gently inserted through the urethra into the bladder. Water or saline is instilled through the cystoscope to visualise and dilate the passage, gently stretching the bladder wall for a detailed, clear view.
If needed, abnormal tissue samples can be removed through the cystoscope for laboratory analysis, and foreign bodies or small stones can also be removed this way during the same visit. The average procedure takes just 2-5 minutes.
