How Common Is Kidney Cancer?
About 7,800 people in the UK are diagnosed with kidney cancer every year. It is more common in men and becomes more common with age; it is rare under 40, with the exception of Wilms’ tumour, which affects young children. Usually only one kidney is affected.
Causes and Risk Factors
The exact cause is often unknown, but recognised risk factors include:
- Cigarette smoking
- Obesity
- High blood pressure or advanced kidney disease, especially in patients on dialysis
- Occupational exposure to substances such as those found in blast furnaces, coke-ovens, trichloroethylene, cadmium, lead, and asbestos
- Inherited risk rare, though occasional family clustering is seen
Surgery remains the main treatment for kidney cancer.
Symptoms: Why Blood in the Urine Matters
Blood in the urine (haematuria) is not always serious, but it should always be investigated by a urologist. Investigations typically include urine testing, cystoscopy, and ultrasound of the kidneys and bladder. Causes of bleeding can include infection or inflammation, stones, an enlarged prostate in men, or cancer of the bladder, kidney or prostate a symptom that should never be ignored.
