How Common Is Bladder Cancer?
Over 10,000 people in the UK are diagnosed with bladder cancer every year, making it the 5th most common cancer. It is more common in men and rare under the age of 40.
Causes and Risk Factors
Smoking is the most common cause of bladder cancer it can take years for the chemicals in cigarettes to cause the disease. Historical occupational exposure to dye, rubber, textile, paint, and printing industry chemicals (common in the 1950s-60s, now banned) is also linked to bladder cancer, with a latency period of up to 25 years. Chronic urinary infections and untreated bladder stones are linked to a less common type of the disease, squamous cell cancer.
How Bladder Cancer Is Treated
Most bladder cancers develop in the bladder lining and can be managed successfully with minor surgery performed via the urethra, followed by regular surveillance inspections to monitor for recurrence. If the cancer has grown into the bladder muscle, it is more serious and requires bladder removal and/or chemotherapy.
