Infertility is defined as the inability to achieve pregnancy despite frequent, unprotected intercourse for at least one year, and as many as 10-15% of couples worldwide face this challenge. In up to half of these cases, a male factor is involved and most causes are diagnosable and treatable. Dr. Shawket Alkhayal, Consultant Urologist & Andrologist, provides comprehensive male infertility diagnosis and treatment for couples across Dubai and the wider UAE.
Common Causes of Male Factor Infertility
Male infertility is usually linked to low sperm production, or abnormal sperm function or motility. Lifestyle factors such as excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and heavy exposure to certain environmental toxins are significant risk factors. In other cases, an underlying urological condition is responsible.
Varicocele
Dilated veins in the scrotum can prevent normal cooling of the testicles, reducing sperm production or impairing sperm function. Microsurgical varicocelectomy, performed at our Dubai clinic, delivers excellent results with very low recurrence rates.
Undescended Testicle
When one or both testicles fail to descend into the scrotum during fetal development, the result can be testicular atrophy and reduced sperm production later in life.
Hormonal deficiency
Infertility can stem from a problem in the testicles themselves, or from an irregularity in the hypothalamus or pituitary gland the brain structures that regulate testicular hormone production.
Genetic defects
Chromosomal abnormalities such as Klinefelter’s syndrome (an extra X chromosome) can disrupt normal testicular development, leading to low or absent sperm production and possible low testosterone.
Infections
Repeated sexually transmitted infections, such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea, are strongly associated with male infertility because they scar and block the passage of sperm. Mumps contracted after puberty may inflame the testicles and impair sperm production, while inflammation of the prostate, urethra, or epididymis can also alter sperm function.
Diagnosis and Treatment in Dubai
Dr. Alkhayal conducts specialised testing of the testicles, prostate, and seminal vesicles to identify any correctable cause of infertility. Where no clear cause is found, testicular exploration and sperm extraction (TESE) or aspiration can retrieve viable sperm for use in IVF or ICSI.
